SICKERT Bernard 1863-1932 Painter and architectural engraver, born Bernhard Sickert in Munich, Germany, the younger brother of Walter Sickert and the son of Danish-German artist Oswald Adalbert Sickert (1828-1885).
A member of both the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club for many years, he was much loved and greatly respected. Born in Munich into a family of professional artists (his father was Oswald Adalbert Sickert, a Danish landscape artist), Walter later moved to London in 1868. After first intending to be an actor, he studied at the Slade (1881) for some months, but after meeting JM WHISTLER there, he left to become his pupil and studio assistant, helping with his printmaking. Bernhard Sickert was a painter of landscape, still-life and interiors. He took up painting as a career around 1885 and he exhibited at the RBA (1885-1888) and the New English Art Club (1888-1909). He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery.
Sickert’s distinctive style, as well as his cosmopolitan and eccentric lifestyle, propelled him into the art world, allowing him to achieve great success within his lifetime by becoming an elected Associate of the Royal Academy.
